Neuro Linguistic Programming is a form of psychology based on language and personality with powerful applications to business, education and therapy. One of the fundamental premises of NLP is that ‘the Outcome is your Communication’. Rephrased, this means that the way in which we communicate effects the outcome we receive. NLP however takes this concept much further by analyzing people’s physiology, eye patterns, and word patterns, all of which give feedback about how a person processes information and responds to various scenarios.

The 'intellectual technology' of NLP is well recognized as being one of the most effective tools in business, sales, negotiations, public speaking and coaching. Many of the world’s top politicians are NLP trained and use NLP language patterns in their public addresses.

NLP is a behavioral technology. It offers a set of guiding principles, attitudes, and techniques for real-life behaviour, and allows you to change, adopt or eliminate behaviours as you desire. NLP gives you the ability to choose your mental, emotional, and physical states of well-being and has been used in business, education and therapy for over 30 years.

The History of NLP

NLP was created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in 1975. Their initial intention was to discover and model the behaviour of individuals who were excellent communicators. By modeling these individuals, Bandler and Grindler saw the opportunity to develop a system, which became NLP, that would allow them to teach others how to become powerful and effective communicators. They initially studied world renowned Hypnotherapist Milton Erickson, gestalt therapist Fritz Perls and the ground breaking family therapist Virginia Satir, as well as utilising some components of Pavlovian behavioural psychology. Over the years, many others have contributed to the growth of NLP.

What Can NLP Do?

From the original models of NLP, a range of techniques have been developed by leading practitioners over the past 30 years. These techniques enable one to change their thought processes, behaviours and beliefs by removing any limitations one may have and thus opening the possibility for any given person to realize their potential in life. NLP also opens up more choices by increasing awareness of emotional and physical states, and thus increasing the control one has over their life

In summary, NLP explores how the mind works, and provides a framework for modelling excellence in thought and behaviour to deliver positive change.

  • Neuro refers to the neurological system, where our experiences are processed through our five senses - Visual (sight), Auditory (sound), Kinesthetic (feel), Olfactory (smell) and Gustatory (taste)

  • Linguistic refers to the way we use both verbal and non-verbal communication to express our experiences and communicate with others.

  • Programming refers to our strategies for all that we do in life. Everything we do has an unconscious order and sequence which we communicate internally to produce results.

Cause and Effect

One of the first things anyone interested in NLP learns is the simple equation of C > E. What this means is that Cause is greater than Effect. The Cause side refers to being at Cause for your own actions and for where you are in life. The Effect side means being at Effect - "everything happens to me, it wasn't my fault".

Most people in the world want to be at Cause but very few are. NLP techniques help people move from the Effect to the Cause so that they are in control of their own environment and can realize their potential.

One of the newest and most powerful developments in NLP, Time Line Therapy® was created by Dr. Tad James and introduced in the 1988 book Time Line Therapy and the Basis of Personality.

“The latest development in NLP, Time Line Therapy® is an unmatched method for creating powerful change in business, education and therapy”

The basic principle of Time Line Therapy® is that individuals have a time line along which all their personal history is stored and can be accessed. This includes emotions such as  happiness and anger, joy and sadness or love and hate. The time line also holds ‘limiting decisions’ such as ‘I’m not good enough’ or ‘I can’t make that much money’ and ‘empowering decision’ such as ‘I can do anything I want to’. The combination of negative emotions and limiting decisions are often the cause of unfulfilled ambitions and goals and form a major part of the limiting components of a person’s personality.

“Time Line Therapy® utilizes a person’s own internal “Time Line” to work with their unconscious mind in healing emotional traumas and removing negative emotions and unwanted thoughts and behaviours”

With Time Line Therapy® it is possible to intervene in a client’s time line therapeutically and assist the client in major changes in life by releasing past negative emotions and limiting decisions, thus helping the client set and achieve their goals in life. Time Line Therapy® has been so successful in its results that it has been utilised by psychiatrists, psychologists, marriage and family counselors, social workers, life and business coaches for well over a decade.

“Who are we if not the collection of our memories? For almost 100 years, psychologists have agreed that our past experiences do determine who we are, and how we act”

Time Line Therapy® teaches a collection of techniques that allow an individual to gain emotional control over their life. Inappropriate emotional reactions, such as unwarranted anger or depression, anxiety or fear, are often responsible for preventing people from achieving the quality of life they desire and are capable of. Likewise, limiting decisions, such as "I'm not good enough”, or "I don't deserve a great marriage," create limitations in an individual’s ability to achieve reachable and attainable outcomes. The application of Time Line Therapy® techniques enable the elimination of many such issues from an individual’s past, allowing forward momentum to a more compelling future

Through using Time Line Therapy® techniques, personal happiness and professional success will be more consistent and predictable. Effectiveness in working with others and the ability to empower oneself for optimum results will be increased. The ability to generate empowering internal emotional states, eliminate negative emotions and limiting decisions, identify and change limiting beliefs, envision a compelling future with an increased chance of it happening are typical results of Time Line Therapy®..

In summary, Time Line Therapy® consists of three primary techniques; the releasing of negative emotions, the removal of limiting decisions, and the process of installing a desirable and achievable future. The combination of these techniques often cause profound change in an individuals personality as they re-evaluate their priorities and actions in life in order to finally achieve what it is they want to.
